Day 1 notes from the Pony Asia-Pacific Zone Championships

It was an exciting Monday in Okinawa, Japan as the PONY Asia-Pacific Zone welcomed the six participating teams to the Pony Asia-Pacific Zone Championships. Below are some of the notes from the day's games:

Game #1: Japan 27   Australia 0   F/4

Notes: Japan used a 12-run top of the second inning en route to a decisive victory over Australia. Six players recorded multi-hit games for the Japanese, and defensively, Japan's pitching staff only allowed one hit.

Game #2: Chinese Taipei 6   Korea 1   F/5

Notes: It was a pitcher's duel for the first two and a half innings of the game, before Korea struck first with its only run of the game. Chinese Taipei countered in the top of the fourth, when Cheng-Yi Chen knocked in two of his teammates on a single to right field. Chinese Taipei went on a four-run rally in the top of the fifth, and it's pitching staff shut the game down without a hiccup in the fifth. On the day, Chinese Taipei's four pitchers combined to allow just three hits and four walks, while surrendering just a run.

Game #3: Chinese Taipei 22   Australia 0   F/4

Notes: Chinese Taipei's solid pitching from Game #2 carried over into Game #3, as its three-man pitching staff allowed no runs on one hit and a walk, while striking out 11 of the 14 batters the team faced in the game. Offensively, thanks, in part, to a 15-run bottom of the second inning, CT won its second and last game of day one decisively.

Game #4: Thailand 10   India 0   F/2

Notes: Thailand was able to take advantage of seven Indian errors offensively in two, five-run innings.

Tuesday's matchups:

Game #6: Korea (0-1) vs. Japan (1-0)
Game #7: Japan vs. Thailand (1-0)
Game #8: India (0-1) vs. Australia (0-2)
Game #9: Australia vs. Thailand
